Determine the coefficient of consolidation, c v , for the data in Craig Problem 7.1 via the (a) root time method and (b) log time method. You can use Excel to plot the data points, but it is strongly recommended that you draw the smooth curves and associated trends through your data points by hand . 2. Problem 7.3 in Craig 3. A 10 m thick layer of NC clay ( ρ sat = 1.9 Mg/m 3 ) is overlain by 3 m of sand ( ρ = 2.0 Mg/m 3 ) and underlain by a sandy gravel. The ground water table is located at the top of the clay layer. A load of 100 kPa is to be applied at the ground surface over a large area. Take c v = 1.39 m 2 /yr for the clay. Determine what will be the effective stress in the clay layer 9 m below the ground surface at 2, 4, 6, and 12 yrs after the load is applied. 4. A 5-m-thick clay layer has c v = 0.90 m 2 /yr and is overlain by saturated sand. For a particular loading situation, the ultimate consolidation settlement, s c , for the clay was determined to be 25 cm: a. If the clay was underlain by impermeable rock, how long would it take for the layer to settle 20 cm?
