Traditionally, psychosomatic disorders or psychophysiological disorders - physical illnesses that have a strong psychological component were distinguished from illnesses that were strictly organic problems. Distinct from conversion disorder: Actual tissue damage in psychophysiological disorders. DSM-IV-TR criteria: (a) Temporal relationship between psychological factors and onset of or recovery from medical condition, (b) psychological factor interferes with treatment, or (c) psychological factors are added health-risk factor for the person. Psychological conditions can directly affect physiological processes by causing changes in the immune system. Psychological conditions can inhibit healthy behaviors and habits. Psychological conditions can affect how people respond and adhere to treatment.
