Scientific Method Scientific Method Scientific Method: Systematic method for describing and explaining phenomena incorporating the following principles: Empirical Verification, Operational Definition, Statistical Generalization, Empirical Confirmation.

Empirical Verification (EV): Descriptive statement true only if it corresponds with observed reality that is sense data consensually observed by different individuals. Operational Definition (OD): All terms or variables defined by operations used to manipulate or observe their observable referents. Controlled Observation : Testing of hypotheses that are causal or predictive statements about relationships between two variables (e.g., anti-depressant medication will reduce depressive mood and morbid thinking among depressives). To determine if a relationship truly exits, values on the one variable, the independent variable , must be observed or produced which, in turn, produces or causes different values on another variable, the dependent variable , and all other variables (confounding variables) can be discounted as possible causes of change on the dependent variable. Issue of Internal validity.

Statistical Generalization : Once a relationship has been verified, it can be generalized to conditions differing from those under which it was made only if the conditions constituted a random sample of conditions to which one wanted to generalize. Issue of External validity. Empirical Confirmation
