Case study: DB DB’s right primary visual cortex was surgically removed (at the age of 33) for treatment of a non-malignant tumor situated in the right visual cortex (V1). This intervention resulted in a dense hemianopia (impairment of vision) affecting the left visual field. Although DB reported no visual awareness in his left field of vision, tests revealed he was still able to discriminate and identify images on the basis of their form within his blind field. During the original testing, he demonstrated successful manual localization, saccadic localization, orientation discrimination and motion detection. DB was diagnosed as having “blindsight”. Although he was not consciously aware of having visual information from his left field, his responses on forced choice guessing experiments demonstrated that he was somehow receiving visual information. 1.
