Formation of the United Nations ** After WW2, a new international body of representatives was formed to provide a place to discuss world problems and developing solutions, called the United Nations (U.N.). **Representatives met in April 1945 to establish the U.N. **Two main bodies of the U.N. are the General Assembly which includes representatives from all member nations; each member has one vote. The other main body is the Security Council which has 15 members and five permanent nations: the United States, Russia, France, Great Britain, and China.

Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan, NATO, Warsaw Pact ** Truman Doctrine- An economic and military program designed to help other nations resist Soviet aggression. It was based on the theory of containment which involved limiting Communism to areas already under Soviet control. The U.S. pledged to help any nation resist Soviet expansion. Truman sent military and economic aid to Greece and Turkey so they could resist Communism. ** Marshall Plan- Proposed in 1947, an economic aid package designed to strengthen democratic governments and lessen the appeal of Communism. America spent billions to help Western European countries recover WW2. Although the U.S. offered this aid to Eastern Europeans nations from Stalin forbade them to accept it. ** NATO- The NATO alliance was formed after the Berlin Airlift and the
