Gender Difference In Science and Math Review Try to look at the overlap of distributions to decide if they are practically meaningful. -Termed effect size So focused on gender difference that we make up stuff that might not be there Changing ideas to a theory in gender similarities differences are likely to be small and very frequent Differences lie in- men report masturbation more (.2,.3) effect size Are there fewer women in science? NSF Reports- Science and Engineering Degrees 1996-2995- 37.7 percent of people receiving degrees in science are women 18 percent of degrees for engineering were women more women are receiving undergraduate degrees across the nation then men Career Outcomes women in serious minority compared to men in science related fields Abilities Boys and girls do not differ on key skills for success in math girls out-peroform math up to high school Achievement and ability tests under-predict girls success tests are not being prepared properly to capture girls performance, don't contain the right kind of questions to bring out these differences Gender differences in distributions of ability do not differ at all in some counties no difference in cross cultures Why so few women in science
