Why don’t researchers want to study women’s health Research Complexity issues o Women have menstrual cycles and some researchers may be put off in having to deal with normal variations in women’s hormonal cycles Research risk o Concern over ethical and legal risks associated with women who are/become pregnant during participation in research trials Medical Research US Federal Funding mandates Require inclusion of women unless can justify why health issue not applicable (ex prostate cancer) OR risks are unduly high relative to benefits gained by knowledge Do the regulations work More women are included BUT…. Data not analyzed with eye toward gender issues o Gender not included in statistical analyses o Fail to attend to possible health issues (confounds) precluding generalizations beyond samle Question Do women receive adequate health care information/education? What factors qua3lify who knows what Do women receive adequate health care coverage? What factors shape whether women have adequate care o What kind of health care is out there for women Health Education The better your education the more likely you are to understand what your doctor communicates to you
