Running Head: CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION 1 Cheryl Leon Guerrero AC1907984 J10V Criminal Investigation J10J Assignment 4 January 8, 2020 Prompt: You are a detective called to the scene of a homicide in an apartment building. The deceased is a young male who has been stabbed numerous times. The roommate of the deceased man is present in the room, his shirt is covered in blood, and there is a knife on the floor. Uniformed officers are guarding the doors and the roommate. There are four (4) important actions you must take; discuss these fully including how the actions should be taken, their importance, and the consequences of not taking the actions. Crime Scene Procedure As a detective who was called out to a crime scene, in most cases upon arrival, the scene should have already been secured. After making sure that the scene is secure, four vital actions need to take place at the crime scene. Ensure that the scene is safe, the confirmation of death, a briefing from the scene and a thorough walkthrough of the scene. These actions need to take place in this order to ensure the investigation ends in the best way possible. The first step in the process if it has not already been secured, is to cordon off a perimeter of the scene that includes all areas that may contain evidentiary items or give clues to establishing the manner and cause of death. There should only be one entry/exit area and its use should be limited to only personal involved in evaluating the scene. A list should be kept of all who have entered or left the cordoned area as to preserve the evidence and to insure nothing is
