A cylindrical pressure vessel has an inner diameter of 150mm and a wall thickness of 5mm, and it contains a pressure of 20MPa. The safety factor against yielding must be at least 0 X = 2. Also, a leak-before-break criterion must be met, with a safety factor of at least a X = 9 on crack length (if we call the critical crack length to be c c , this means ca cX t ). (a) Is the vessel safe if it is made from 300-M steel ( Y σ =1740MPa, IC K =65MPa m )? (b) From ASTM A517-F steel ( Y = 760MPa, IC K = 187MPa m )? (c) What minimum fracture toughness is required for the material in this application? (d) What safety factor on K to IC K (i.e. the value of / IC KK ) is accomplished by the a X = 9 requirement? 4. A company sells 100,000 widgets made out of SiC. The Weibull parameters are m = 10.0 and S o = 100 MPa (with V o = 1.00 m 3 ). The widgets have a volume of 5.00x10 -5 m 3
