A) Objectives: To familiarize with the window-based OrCAD Capture (Rel. 9.10) - a schematic capture software tool. To create the schematic capture of a digital logic circuit. To learn about design-flow and create a netlist for circuit simulation using PSpice. B) Pre-lab Assignments: Read through this lab manual to understand the instructions clearly. Bring along a flash memory drive to save your files. C) Experiment Procedures: I. Introduction In this experiment, you will create a schematic circuit and generate a netlist file using OrCAD. Page 2 of 19 The function of the circuit is to add or subtract two 4-bit binary numbers A and B. If the input M (Mode select) is 0, then the circuit will give the sum A+B. If M is 1, then the circuit will do the operation A-B. The result of the operation in both cases will appear in the output S and the output carry (CARRY). For detailed operation of the circuit, you can read Section 4.5 of the course (4th edition). Subtraction with 2’s complement is explained in Section 1.5. II. Step-by-step Procedure 1. Using OrCAD Capture (Rel. 9.10) To invoke OrCAD Capture, double-click on the icon for OrCAD Capture Release 9.10 or use the windows " Start " button and choose Programs ; follow by OrCAD Release 9.10 and choose Capture as shown below. The 3 major components in OrCAD Rel. 9.10 which you will be making use of in the experiments of this course are: a) OrCAD Capture - for schematic capture, VHDL input files and netlist generation. b) OrCAD PSpice A/D - for design simulation and analysis. c) OrCAD Express - for managing PLD projects. Software tools appropriate for different stages in the design process are linked together to form a seamless flow of information. This easy-to-use framework relieves the designer of the time consuming tasks and the inconvenient of moving from one tool set to another. After invoking OrCAD, the minimized " Session Log " window appears. As you go along, the Session Log will record the events and errors that have occurred during the current session.

Page 3 of 19 2. Create a new project To create a new project, click File on the Tools menu; follow by New and Project . In " New Project " window, enter the name of the project in the box at the top and enter the directory or location you want to store this file in the box at the bottom. Use ckt1xxxx as the project name where xxxx is the last 4 digits of your student ID. The default file extension is .opj for project.
