Purpose : To synthesize one of two unknown cobalt complexes (A or B), and, in the second week, purification the cobalt complex is necessary in order to measure the wavelengths of maximum absorbance of five cobalt complexes (A, B, C, D, and E). Using this data and the spectrochemical series the identities of the five cobalt complexes will be seen. Procedure : 1. Obtained 20 ml of acetone and chilled in an ice water bath along with wash bottle. 2. Mixed 4.000 g of NH 4 Cl with 10 ml of distilled H 2 O. 3. Warmed gently on a hotplate until solution dissolved and solution was brought up to boiling temperature Observations: Dissolved creating a clear solution 4. Obtained 4.979 g of cobalt salt B Observations: Solution became dark blue 5. Placed 0.298 g activated charcoal into 200 ml beaker 6. Added hot contents to 0.3 g activated charcoal Observations: Became muddy purple color 7. Added 15 ml of aqueous ammonia to beaker, stirred well, and cooled again in an ice water bath until temp is 10 degrees Celsius
