Unformatted text preview: Ring Systems Do these ring systems, particularly that of Saturn, give a visual clue to how the Solar System originated, and may have looked in its early stages? Answer: TO SOME EXTENT – YES, BUT ONLY A CLUE – FROM A CIRCUM-SOLAR DISC OF MOLECULAR H2, He AND OTHER VOLATILES PLUS MATERIAL, referred to loosely as “dust”,and called the “SOLAR NEBULA”. APPARENTLY, SATURN’S RING SYSTEM, FIRST OBSERVED BY GALILEO IN 1610 AND THEN ELUCIDATED BY CHRISTIAAN HUYGENS IN 1655, DID PROVIDE SUCH A VISUAL CLUE TO THE ORIGINAL DEVELOPERS OF THE “SOLAR NEBULA” HYPOTHESIS – IMMANUEL KANT IN 1755 AND PIERRE LAPLACE IN 1796. Ring System Have such “dust discs” rotating around young stars in Molecular clouds been imaged, by telescopes – YES. SO THEY ARE REAL, NOT IMAGINARY? – YES. N.B. Two(2) excellent articles have been published recently on the ring systems of the giant planets: Burns,J.A.(1999).Chapter 16 (pp.221-240) of “The New Solar System”. Burns,J.A.,Hamilton,D.P. and Showalter,M.R.(2002). Scientific American,Feb.2002,pp.64-73.
