Physics 486 Homework Set 7 Due: Nov 1, 2007 1. Griffiths 8.16. Tunneling in the Stark Effect. (The hand-out on tunneling should suffice for this problem.) This problem concerns the potential ionization of an atom in the presence of an electric field via tunneling of an electron in the atom to the exterior. Here, the question is whether it can happen in a typical Stark effect experiment wherein atomic spectra are observed to shift due to the application of a field. As a toy model, consider an electron of mass m in a deep finite square well of depth V 0 and width 2a as shown in Griffiths Section 2.6. a) What is the energy of the ground state measured up from the bottom of the well? (The well is deep enough that this ground state energy is much less than the potential depth – an approximate answer will do.) b) Now introduce an electric field to the potential landscape given by H E = - α x , where for an applied field of magnitude E and electron charge e, we have α = eE.
