Discuss the relationship between “Purpose” and “Thesis” and their importance to developing a persuasive argument or a “thesis driven” essay. Provide specific examples of “Purpose” and “Thesis” to support and illustrate your discussion. In a persuasive essay, there always has to be a goal to the essay. The purpose is that goal. The thesis, on the other hand, is a position statement. It asserts what the argument is, and what side of it the writer takes. In general, that is also the side that the writer wants the reader to take (but not always). The purpose is much broader. It includes the context that the essay was written in, and takes account of the audience and what they are able to do, once they’ve decided to agree with the author.
