(DIIIE) University of Salerno Fisciano (SA), I-84084, ITALY { paddesso,longo } @unisa.it Abstract This paper presents an architectural proposal integrating a vehicle parking service into the 3GPP IMS and describes the development of an IMS-based prototype implementing such service. The proposed service allows automatic pay- ments to car drivers through their WLAN-enabled IMS terminals integrated in the vehicles, on the basis of the specific parking zone where the vehicle is stationed and the duration of the stay. The proposed architecture, exploiting the security and smooth service integration features proper of IMS, will allow strong mutual user-network authenti- cation, reliable authorization to service access by users, complete integration of the service charging mechanism with the IMS native on-line accounting infrastructure, strong protection of the service registration phase, SIP session signalling and payment transactions through the IPsec and HTTPS protocols. 1. Introduction After the emergence of UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) [1], the so-called third gen- eration of mobile telephony allowing users to exploit real- time multimedia information and communication services, the next challenge by telecom operators is to provide users with efficient and high-quality 3G services for large-scale communication. 3GPP has specified the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) [2] for the provisioning of multimedia services in the Next Generation Networking (NGN). IMS defines a complete architecture that enables the convergence of voice, video, data and mobile network technology over an IP-based infrastructure. For these kinds of services the importance of Presence, a mechanism able to dynamically manage information about the status of users, equipments and services, is deemed to be crucial for the creation and fruition of innovative services. In previous works the IMS Presence architecture has been already used in conjunction with Location Systems, based on several positioning techniques, in order to provide location-based services (see e.g. [3]). This paper presents an architectural proposal integrating a vehicle parking service into the 3GPP architecture and describes the design and development of an IMS-based prototype implementing such service. The proposed service allows automatic payments to car drivers through their IMS terminals integrated in the vehicles. The monitoring of the vehicle position within the parking area as well as the time duration of its stay is performed through a WLAN-based location mechanism controlled by a Location Server (LS) which interacts with a specific Presence Server (PS) integrated within the IMS- like architecture.
