8/26/2010 What is law? Enforceable rules o What is meant by enforceable? The courts will do something about it. It doesn’t mean making you do what you are supposed to. More about consequences for not doing what you were supposed to do. Example o Notice for quitting a job Law will never force someone to do a job o Tour de France Blood doping against the law. o Others Sources of Law Constitutions (and treaties) the supreme law of the land Statues – congress of a state legislature passes o Ex. Constitution says freedome of speech, texas says you cannot burn the US flag. If that is contradictory then constitution law overrides state law. It was argued that burning the US flag was symbolic speech Regulations o Creates detailed rules. Think of airport security they decide how much liquids you can have, taking off your shoes, etc. Congress creates groups that create these regulations. Private law (contracts)
