Free Response Questions 1. The   laws   of   thermodynamics   state   that   the   energy   from   plants   obtained   by  photosynthesis is transferred to the primary predator. First, autotrophs receive light  energy from the sun. Then, the primary predators consume the plants and use the energy  for their own. The secondary predator eats the primary predator, transferring energy  along the way. This continues to the top of the food chain. When the predators and  plants die, the energy continues the cycle. Decomposers use the energy from the detritus,  and finally, fuel the autotrophs again. 2. Environmental changes stimulate animals to  change their behaviors  in a particular  direction to fit the circumstance. For example, kinesis, which is a change in activity or  turning rate in response to a stimulus, affects animals’ behaviors in many ways. As the  environment changes, the organism will respond to be able to survive the change. This  increases survivorship in the organisms because they begin to adapt to their environment  by   evolving   or   changing   its   habits. The environment is the main cause of animals to migrate. Usually, conditions such as the  climate, temperature, water availability, and nutrient abundance cause individuals to  migrate. Migration also increases survivorship because when an animal is in danger or in  need of something, then it can move to a place where its needs are met. 3. Curve A represents the large herbivores. Curve A is a straight line, so this animal must be  stable.   Herbivores   never   have   a   time   where   the   death   or   birth   rate   rises   or   falls  drastically.   They   are   hunted   by   their   predators   all   their   life.
