Intuition Authority Tenacity Common Sense Rationalism Empiricism Science How do we “know” anything? Intuition - Direct-Access Knowledge – Knowledge derived immediately via channels that may or may not involve the normal senses. – Hunches, gut feeling, ESP, first impressions – What are the odds two people in a class of 30 people will have the same birthday? How do we “know” anything? Authority - “knowing” something because a trusted authority says it is true – On July 26, 1969, Neil Armstrong, a graduate in 1955 of Purdue University, was the first human to step onto the surface of the moon. – How do we know this is true? • We know this because of what we have been told by teachers, books, the news media, and other sources that we consider to be credible authorities. How do we “know” anything?
