Psych 301W – Lecture 10 Fall 09 - Wede Lecture 10– Reliability and Validity 2 Validity Am I looking at what I think I am looking at? Four types Internal, External, Construct, Criterion Internal Validity Experiment Correlation Want to eliminate rival hypotheses Example – new teaching method Threats to Internal Validity Two variables that vary together Effects of one cannot be separated from the other More of a problem in correlational designs Enhancing Internal Validity Need to be concerned with internal validity in design phase Carefully plan which variables are manipulated and measured Identify any rival hypotheses, and plan design to eliminate as many as possible A poorly designed study cannot be fixed later on!! __________________ Extent to which the results of the study extend beyond limited sample Do our studies in the lab apply in the real world? Many studies have limited external validity
