Introduction Audience is everything in rhetoric! Understanding your audience is the most important component of writing. If you don’t understand who you’re writing for, you won’t understand your writing task. Most importantly, you probably won’t find success as a writer. Most great professional writers are successful not only because of their mastery of language, but also because of their ability to understand the rhetorical context of a specific writing task.

What do your readers expect? What do they want from your writing? Do they want information? Do they want to learn? Is their learning just for the sake of learning? Or is there a practical element to what they plan to learn (for example, learning how to fill out tax forms in April)? Do they want to do something such as learning how to fly fish? Do they want to be inspired? Are they looking for expertise or just another perspective? What do you want them to do after reading your writing?
