Synthesizing information What does synthesis mean? “the composition or combination of parts or elements so as to form a whole” (from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary) A synthetic material is made of different materials.

Synthesizing information An essay, report, story, or article is also a synthetic material because each is composed of various parts: thesis, characters, words, sentences, setting, paragraphs, quotations, paraphrases, citations, introductions, conclusions, etc. Now that you’ve drafted a report or essay, or are in the process of completing your draft, you need to make some tough decisions about how to organize it and synthesize all those parts.
