Jose Oseguera Honors English 3 Period 1 The Catcher in the Rye: Study Guide Questions Chapter 1 1. What does Holden mean when he says that his brother D.B. is out in Hollywood “being a prostitute”? - What Holden means when he says that his brother D.B. is out in Hollywood “being a prostitute” is that his brother is such an excellent writer, whom he admires because of stories he has written like The Secret Goldfish , that he decides to use his talent for writing in order to create movie scripts. Holden calls D.B. a “prostitute” because he hates movies and he knows D.B. is only writing movie scripts for the money. 2. Where is Holden as the story begins? - As the story begins, Holden is at his all-boy school, Pencey Prep, on top of Thomsen Hill, overseeing the last football game of the year. 3. What is Pencey Prep, and why does Holden dislike it? - Pencey Prep is an all-boy school with a goal to “mold boys into splendid, clear- thinking young men” and it’s the school the protagonist, Holden, attends in Agerstown, Pennsylvania. Holden dislikes Pencey because it isn’t any different than any other school he has attended and the students there aren’t friendly or pleasant to be around. 4. How did Holden let the fencing team down? - Holden let the fencing team down by leaving all the foils and equipment on the subway in New York on their way to a fencing meet. He had to keep looking at his map so they would know where to get off. 5. Why was Holden being kicked out of Pencey Prep? - Holden is being kicked out of Pencey Prep because he failed four out of the five subjects he is taking and not applying himself in school. 6. What kind of health does Holden appear to be in? - Due to Holden’s heavy smoking, he has no breath or he looses his breath fast when he runs. Holden growing six and a half inches in one year shows physical growth, but not mental growth. Holden has Tuberculosis caused by his heavy smoking that’s why he’s in a facility for checkups. Holden claims he is pretty healthy, despite him having Tuberculosis and breath shortage. Chapter 2 1. Who is Mr. Spencer and why does Holden visit him? - As Holden is about to leave Pencey Prep, he decides to go visit Mr. Spencer, his history teacher at Pencey. Holden visits Mr. Spencer because he wanted to say his final goodbye to him just as he was leaving for New York.

2. What does Spencer do that particularly annoyed Holden? - What annoyed Holden about his visit to Mr.Spencer’s house to say goodbye was the smell and the appearance of Mr. Spencer’s room. His room smelled like Vicks Nose Drops and Mr. Spencer’s medication was all over the place. Furthermore, Mr. Spencer was wearing this old ripped-up robe and showing his legs, which Holden didn’t like seeing. 3.
