September 25 The blast- (st helens) - lateral blast was comparatively cool at 100-300 celsius - speed was almost 500km/hr collapsed- reduced height of volcano, produced horseshoe shaped ampitheatre inside the volcano. - lahars (volcanic debris flows) there was two ways the lahars were generated 1- melted of snow and ice, a lot of water was produced from melting and mixed with ash erupted from volcano. 2- the debris avalanche deposit was water saturated, as it was inplaced, it drained some of the water and a lahar was generated from the end of that. how sequence of events are linked at mt st helens. lahar = flowing concrete able to carry trees and big things. = very destructive element if come in contact with houses some lahars flow very large distances. final costs: 35 people died. 22 people never found. 2.7$ billion us in damage Stage 3- post-climactic activity - series of diminishing explosive eruptions (rose a couple km into atmosphere) - lava domes started growing in the amphitheatre
