(3) Using changes in oxidation numbers, identify the substance gaining electrons and the substance losing electrons in the following (a) 2 CO(g) + O 2 (g) 2 CO 2 (g) ON C = +2 το +3 oxidation so the C atoms lose electrons; ON O (in CO) = -2 το - 2; ON O (in O 2 ) = 0 το -2 reduction so the O atoms in O 2 gain electrons
