What is the Purpose of Government? To Preserve Order - in the state of nature, “the life of man, is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.” Thomas Hobbes To Protect Freedom/Rights ‘All men are by nature equally free and independent and have certain inherent rights.” John Locke To Provide Public Goods Benefits that all or most citizens enjoy but they are not likely to provide for themselves without government. To Promote Equality “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
