THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IN DETERRING CRIMES IN UNITEDSTATES2AbstractCapital punishment is a legal death punishment that is applied by the U.S. judicial system.Currently, the death penalty is used by the federal government, 29 states, and the military. Capitalpunishment calls for execution of people prosecuted for committing heinous crimes –either byhanging or injection of lethal substances. Despite the common assumption that the death penaltyprevents the offenders from committing such crimes in future, the perception raises a majorconcern of “the value for human life and how to best to protect it.” According to Criminal Justice(2019), endorsing killing does not solve problems because its benefits are illusory. Capitalpunishments deny the convict due process of the law since once a person is executed, he or shecannot benefit from fresh evidence or any other laws which might “warrant the reversal of aconviction” (Lopez, 2015).Moreover, the application of capital punishment is random anddiscriminatory based on color, economic background, educational level, among other factors.According to ACLU (2019), “a society that respects life does not deliberately kill humanbeings.” Capital punishment can only help to deter capital crimes if it is promptly andconsistently applied. Keywords: Capital punishment

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IN DETERRING CRIMES IN UNITEDSTATES5The Effectiveness of Capital Punishment in Deterring Crimes in United StatesIntroductionThe use of capital punishments as a way of preventing the occurrence of future capitalcrimes is being applied in several countries in the world. United States is one of the countriesthat have continuously applied these punishments even though the rise of human rights hasfacilitated the elimination of death penalties in some countries in the world. Death penaltiesgreatly assist the criminal justice in enforcing the laws and preventing occurrence of monstrouscrimes. However, the efficiency of this method of deterring crimes is questioned for its aim ofprotecting human lives although they devalue them through execution. This paper examines theeffectiveness of death penalties in crime deterrence in the United States by evaluating varioushelpful resources.
