Posterior Muscles of the Shoulder Girdle MUSCLE FROM TO ACTION Levator Scapulae transverse processes of the first 4 cervical vertebrae vertebral border of scapula between the superior angle and scapular spine Acts in elevation and adduction of the scapula; when the trunk is erect the weight of the arm pulls the acromial end of the scapula down while the levator scapulae acts as the other part of the force couple to downwardly rotate the scapula, this occurs because the weight of the upper extremity prevents the levator scapulae from adducting the scapula Rhomboids - Major and Minor vertebral border of scapula from the spine to the inferior angle Acts in downward rotation, adduction, elevation, and with the middle trapezius stabilizes the scapula during shoulder abduction Trapezius occipital bone and spinous processes of C7 and all the thoracic vertebrae upper - I - posterior border of lateral 1/3 of clavicle II - top of acromium process middle - III - upper border of scapular spine
