Chapter  1 William Schutz Theory  o Affection = desire to receive love and liking o Inclusion = desire to be social and included into groups  o Control = desire to influence people and events Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs o Physical Needs (Air, Food) Alert and Response Interaction  o Safety Needs Communication is necessary in order to meet all our survival needs Ex: call owner of house and let him know you have termites Communication protects us from dangers and harm  Ex: if food is unsafe, you hear it on the news o Belonging Needs Need others in order to enjoy life Talk with others, listen, respond o Self-Esteem Needs Valuing and respecting others Family members help children form images of themselves Self-esteem is shaped by how others communicate with us o Self-Actualization Needs
