What is Logic? 1-1 Subject matter of logic  Thinking and reasoning What is the purpose of thinking and reasoning? o Gain knowledge and understanding o In order for thinking to be fruitful: There are means and methods of thinking Various tools and, instruments, various devices and techniques Study of logic is concerned with: o Means or technique, which when observed and used, insures our  thinking will be correct and valid and maybe even true o Comes from the Greek word: Organon meaning “tool” or “instrument” 1-2 Main types of Logical Instruments  Idea or notion    concept  or term o Can be understood logically or psychologically  o Concept tells you  what  of something What of something Is nature or essence Idea: there can be no knowledge of anything without having at least some sort of  idea of what the thing in question is In addition to having concepts, we must order and combine our concepts into  propositions o Susceptible of either truth or falsity

1-4 Main Objects of Logical instruments Objects of knowledge: o What  question: reveals what the thing in question is; its nature, essence  or character ( term or concept ) What is something? Linguistic tool : Usually answered with a sentence or phrase o Whether something is  questions: existence, reality or factuality of  something ( proposition ) Ex: Is it true that dinosaurs exist? Linguistic tool: Sentence  o Why  question: looking for reason, explanation or cause ( argument or  demonstration Reasons for things Linguistic tool: integrated group of sentences or paragraph  Summary : 1-5 Signs and Semantics
