Verina Atalla October 20, 2009 Renu Jain Chemistry 1111 Lab Synthesis of Alum from Aluminum 1) Why is it necessary to re-crystallize the alum? It gets rid of the water and the alcohol and all other impurities in the alum. 2) Why is it necessary to perform the experiment in a well ventilated area? A chemical reaction may give off a gas.  When you're in a well ventilated area,  the gas mixes with the air, so it's really "diluted". If you're in a space where  there's not a lot of fresh air, the gas the reaction gives off could harm you.
