Friction Questions 1. Friction is a resists the motion caused by another force on an object. In other words, the force or the resisting motion that occurs when two objects rub each other. There are three types of friction sliding, rolling, and fluid friction. 2. There are many examples of friction occurring everyday. -Riding cars -Rockets in space -Riding bicycles 3. The factors that determine the amount of friction between two surfaces are: viscosity, surface/size of surface, speed, weight, air, angle of objects, size of objects and heat. In addition, other factors are how much pressure is pushing them together and how uneven the surfaces of the objects are. 4. The human eye is not able to zoom enough to actually see the even surfaces uneven. However, the microscope is able to zoom more than enough to see all of the roughness on the even smooth surface. In other words, the microscope can see it because of its zooming power and we cannot see it because a human eye is not made to zoom as much as the microscopic. 5. When two objects slide against each other, their uneven surfaces grind together producing a great deal of friction. When two solid objects are in contact and a force is applied to slide one object against the other sliding friction force resists the motion. There are two types of sliding friction, static friction and kinetic friction. Static friction is friction that holds the object in place. Kinetic friction means moving friction.
