ANALYSIS OF ALKALINITY AND CARBONATE HARDNESS IN WATER ABSTRACT:   FOR   THIS   LABORATORY   EXPERIMENT,   WE   ANALYZED   WATER   FOR  ALKALINITY   AND   CARBONATE.   THE   PROCEDURE   FOR   ANALYSIS   REQUIRES   TWO  TITRATIONS: (1) TOTAL ALKALINITY (COMBINATION OF HCO 3 -  AND CO 3 -2 ) IS MEASURED  BY TITRATING WITH STANDARD HCl AND (2) EXCESS NaOH ADDED TO FORM CO 3 -2  IS  TITRATED WITH STANDARD HCl. AFTER THE FIRST TITRATION, HCO 3 -  IS CONVERTED  TO CO 3 -2 . THE SECOND TITRATION ALLOWS US TO DETERMINE HOW MUCH HCO 3 -  WAS  ORIGINALLY   PRESENT,   AND   TO   CALCULATE   THE   ORIGINAL   CARBONATE  CONCENTRATION. THE ALKALINITY OF THE SAMPLE WAS CALCULATED TO BE 91.044  MOLES. THE CALCIUM CARBONATE CONENT WAS CALCULATED TO BE 13.22 G/L, AND  THE CALCIUM BICARBONATE WAS CALCULATED TO BE 13.32 G/L.
