ABSTRACT The purpose of this laboratory experiment was to determine the concentration of iron in a  sample solution of drainage water. After much difficulty, we decided to use the absorption of the  sample solution of water another laboratory group. They determined the absorption to be 0.118 at  508 nm. We then used the computer program Microsoft Excel to determine the concentration of  the sample. We calculated that the concentration of the sample solution of water was 0.0006198.  INTRODUCTION Iron is present everywhere. Its presence can be positive or negative. Iron is beneficial as  a nutrient in food, but it is detrimental when found in water, oils, or “solid state” materials. Since  the presence of iron can be good and bad, it is very important to always know the concentration  of iron present. Because of this, the iron concentration is analyzed regularly.  For this particular laboratory experiment, we are determining the iron concentration in  drainage water. For this laboratory procedure, the sample of drainage water is diluted in an  acidified solution. The leads the iron to be reduced to Fe 2+  with hydroquinone, and complexed
