Time Headway Assignment Automotive Human Factors (IOE 437) Fall 2010 University of Michigan Written by Lidia Kostyniuk (edited by Paul Green) © Time Headway/Gap Assignment Introduction Purpose This experiment examines the extent to which driver differences influence people drive, in particular, how closely the follow other vehicles. This data collected in this experiment can be useful in designing systems to prevent rear-end crashes. More generally, the purpose of this assignment is to introduce you to the concepts of traffic flow and driver behavior through the observation, measurement, and analysis of time headways, and to provide experience with the rewards and challenges of collecting real world data. To carry out and report this experiment, you should find your notes from the lecture on road characteristics and traffic to be helpful. Background Headway is the separation between successive vehicles traveling in the same direction. The separation can be measured in distance or in time. Distance headway is the distance between 2 successive vehicles traveling in the same direction (front bumper to front bumper or rear bumper to rear bumper). Time headway is the interval of time between successive vehicles moving in the same lane and measured from head to head as they pass a point on the road (the difference in their arrival times). Headway is not to be confused with gap (front bumper of the subject’s vehicle to rear bumper of the vehicle ahead). The time headway between vehicles is an important traffic flow characteristic that affects the safety, level of service, driver behavior, and capacity of a road system. A minimum-time headway must always be present to avoid a crash if the lead vehicle decelerates. The time headway between vehicles is an indication of the level or quality of service of the road. The distribution of time headways determines the requirements for passing, merging and crossing. The capacity of the road is governed primarily by the minimum time headway and the time headway distribution under capacity-flow conditions.
