Conformity: Influencing Behavior Conformity: Change in one’s behavior due to the real or imagined influenced of other people. Informational social influence - Tends to happen when the situation is ambiguous and we are uncertain to how to behave in the situation. We tend to look around at others. - We look to other people as a source of information to guide our behavior. - Private acceptance: Conforming to other people’s behavior out of genuine belief that what they are doing or saying is right. Privately accepting this. - Public Compliance: Conforming to other people’s behavior publicly without necessarily believing in what we are doing or saying. Following the crowd. - When we feel that accuracy is most important, we are more likely to conform. Informational Conformity - Contagion: A rapid spread of emotion or behaviors through a crowd. - Mass psychogenic illness: When one person starts reporting random physical symptoms, then other people start feeling sick. Then it snowballs, and everyone
