Staba 1 Joe Staba Mr. Oakey ENGL 1106 27 April 2010 Children with Autism: How Music Therapy Can Help Autism, a behavioral disorder, has been around for years, and to this day, there is still no true cure. Recently, there has been a sudden boost in awareness of Autism due to the fact that the number of children who have it, about 1 in 150 children, has been rising and continues to do so (“Prevalence and Incidence of Autism”, 4). Such a disorder that affects a large percentage of the child population, adults not as severely, needs the general population’s attention as well as researchers. With no medicine or drug that can eliminate the disorder, certain types of therapies arise that can facilitate the autistic child’s integration with other children and people. The dispute then follows as to which therapies to use, which therapies are more effective, and what are the best ways to implement these therapies. There are many types of therapies, which some will be addressed later, but the main focus of this paper is music therapy. Believe it or not, there have been many studies carried out that evaluate the effectiveness of this therapy. With a big enough section of the scientific population behind music therapy as being one of “the best”, this paper will accumulate study’s results and conclusions and formulate an argument for why music therapy is the best method to help treat children with autism. With music’s generally beneficial effect on people with or without autism, and autistic people’s natural affinity towards music, it only makes sense to use it in a therapeutical sense. The great thing about music is the fact that it is non-evasive and non- threatening, which is perfect for autistic children who are generally introverted and non-commutative (Kim, Wigram, and Gold, 390). This and the fact that some autistic children have tendencies to recognize perfect pitch or timbre, and music shows that some connection can be formed between autistic children and music; hence a therapy worth exploring (Heaton, 5). My goal is to prove how beneficial music therapy can be through the referencing of recorded accounts and controlled experiments that display the changes music can have on the behavior and social patterns of autistic children.

Staba 2 Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication , and by restricted and repetitive behavior (“Prevalence and Incidence of Autism”, 1). These signs all begin before a child is three years old. Autism affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize; this process is not exactly understood (“Prevalence and Incidence of Autism”, 1). Autistic children have a very hard time communicating because they naturally do not develop enough verbal skills through the lack of conversation as a very young child. The resistance to change naturally felt by a child with autism combined with their repetitive behaviors can make an autistic child hard to talk with. Not that autism is
