Unformatted text preview: Welcome to MCDB 1A and the 3 Quarter Introductory Biology Series The Breadth of Biology - Atoms to the Biosphere MCDB1A: Introduction to Biochemistry, Cell and Developmental Biology, and Genetics Faculty: Biochemistry - Dr. Stu Feinstein Cell and Developmental Biology – Dr. Les Wilson Genetics - Dr. Rolf Christoffersen Everything - Dr. Douglas Bush This is a Golden Age of Biochemistry, Cell and Developmental Biology and Genetics enormous impacts in our lives clinical medicine pharmaceuticals agriculture industry forensics many other areas By the end of the quarter, we hope you will understand many of the principles that make all of this possible…so, what are we going to talk about for the first few weeks….. The National Institutes of Health has some great booklets that cover a lot of topics that we cover this quarter…and they’re free! Go to: http://publications.nigms.nih.gov/order/ Biochemistry Cell Biology Genetics Section 1 of MCDB1A: “Introduction to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology” Dr. Stu Feinstein Office Hours: Tues/Fri after Lecture, in front of Campbell Hall Office: BioSci2, 5123 E-mail: [email protected] Welcome to MCDB 1A and the 3 Quarter Introductory Biology Series The Breadth of Biology - Atoms to the Biosphere A few logistical matters: Assigned reading is required you’ll need it in upper division courses Don’t memorize chemical structures…. but understand the key features and be able to recognize classes of macromolecules Figures in lecture are mostly from your book, but not all some from earlier editions if I think they were better THIS IS REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT!!! Before we start on biochemistry, let’s do a very fast overview on modern biology….(all this is in chapter 1): 1. What is biology? Biology is the scientific study of living things 2. Cells are the basic unit of life 3. All of life shares a common evolutionary history Evolution is change in the genetic makeup of biological populations through time – this is the major unifying principle of biology; evolution is driven by “natural selection” 4. Genetics/mutations are a major driving force for evolution 5. We understand the molecular basis of genetics in detail 6. Cells grow and reproduce using energy and raw materials from the environment 7. Living organisms regulate their internal environment 8. Living organisms interact with one another 9. Discoveries in biology can be generalized leads to study of model systems 10. How do biologists investigate life? Scientific Method combines observation and logic 1. make observations 2. ask questions 3. propose hypotheses 4. make testable predictions based on hypotheses 5. test the predictions experimentally with controls 6. assess the validity of the predictions/hypotheses 11. Science depends on objectivity and reproducibility 12. Biology is enormously important not just in areas such as medicine and agriculture, but many other areas including many aspects of public policy OK………let’s begin our study of...
