ECSE 527 Optical Engineering: Assignment 4 Assigned: March 31st, 2010 Due: April 19th 2010 Please hand your assignments in to my office (McConnell 809) by 5pm on the due date. Question 1 [15 points] i) Derive the Jones matrix for an arbitrary wave plate of length d with an ordinary axis (refractive index n 0 ) directed along the x -axis, extraordinary axis (refractive index n e ) directed along the y - axis and where propagation is along the z -axis, for light of vacuum wavelength [5] ii) Use this to obtain an expression for the Jones matrix of an m th order halfwave plate (length d )
