Analysis of the Impact of Distributed Generation on Fault Line Selection of Distribution System Shu Xu #1 , Chunhe Zhang #2 , Zhipeng Chen #3 Tiehong Shi #4 # 1-4 Nanjing NARI-Relays Electric CO.,LTD, China 1 [email protected] 2 [email protected] Abstract — Neutral indirectly grounded is a typical earth mode in distribution systems in China. The single-phase-to-ground fault happens frequently in such a system. For safety reasons it is important to locate and clear the earth fault as fast as possible. Many fault line selection methods have been researched and presented. Nowadays, with the propagation of distributed generation(DG) located in the distribution networks, conventional radial passive distribution network will be turned into active network, and the magnitude, direction and distribution of fault current will be changed. This paper explores the effect of DG on fault line selection device. The adaptability of existing fault line selection theories in distribution system with DG units is analyzed. Keywords: distributed generation; power distribution system; fault line selection . INTRODUCTION These days, small non-conventional generation option is rapidly becoming attractive to many utilities across China because these technologies produce energy with less environmental impact, easy to site, and are highly efficient. Distributed Generation (DG) can be considered as “taking power to load”. The most of DGs are connected with distribution networks. Neutral indirectly grounded is a typical earth mode in distribution systems in China and in some other countries. The single-phase-to-ground fault happens frequently in such a system. When single-phase-to-ground fault occurs, the ground fault current is usually not more than ten amperes, so it is hard to detect fault line by conventional relay protection. To detect the fault line accurately and quickly, ground faulted line selection devices are equipped. These devices are usually installed at the beginning of the feeders, can locate the fault line with extracting and analyzing fault eigenvalue. With the increasing trend towards DG application in distribution systems, the distribution network has become an active system, values of fault currents flowing in the system for any given fault will be modified [1] . The introduction of DG in distribution network can affect proper operation of the protection scheme, bring difficulties to ground faulted line detection. This paper concentrates on the single-phase-to-ground fault protection of distributed system in the light of recent developments in form of DG. . EARTHING MODE OF DISTRIBUTION NETWORK AND FAULT LINE SELECTION THEORY In electrical grids the method of neutral point treatment depends on the power supply reliability, network structure, over-voltage and insulation level, mode of relay protection, etc. In China, medium voltage systems (3 ~ 60kV) have an
