Sustainable Agriculture Sustainable agriculture is a system working in harmony with the environment while continuing to be highly productive. Sustainable agriculture is holistic: it treats the farm as an integrated whole composed of elements like soil, plants, animals, and insects whose interaction can be adjusted and enriched to solve problems and maximize yields. Sustainable agriculture is scientific: it relies on knowledge about the elements of the system and their interaction to achieve its results.

Organic Farming Organic farms are managed as a whole system that must be ecologically planned and balanced to improve the soil and protect the ground water. They are managed with older and newer technologies. They typically try not to farm a monoculture. Organic food is produced without residual toxic chemicals. Organic farmers are regulated. All certified organic foods must meet strict organic standards. Farmers and processors must be inspected annually by independent certification organizations. They cannot use synthetic N fertilizers or most petroleum-based pesticides.
