Soil Physical Properties Structure : degree of aggregation of soil particles. Hardness : influenced by structure and water content. Rooting Depth : or Effective Rooting Depth (ERD). Texture : sand, clay, silt, and can also include gravel/stoniness. Porosity : the relative amount and size of voids (air space). Mottling : the oxidation and reduction of iron under anaerobic conditions and is an indicator of poor drainage. Total Available Water : Use physical properties to Estimate (TAW).

4/21/2009 2 Soil texture …the relative proportions of sand, silt and clay in the soil… Sand 0.2 to 2 mm diameter Silt 0.002 to 0.2 mm diameter Clay < 0.002 mm diameter (1 mm ~ 0.04 inches) The relative proportions define the “Soil Textural Class” Soil Texture Classes: High Water Low aeration Plastic Low Water Compact Low aeration Hard, compact Balanced particle size distribution Soil structure : . . . the relative proportions of differ- ent pore sizes created by the aggregation of soil particles. . . arrangement of particles to make pores (holes) visible structure: peds (clods) invisible structure: clay domains, micro aggregates . Soil Structure is influenced by: Texture (finer particles tendency to create finer pores – need a wide range) Organic matter content (carbon,–2 6% in California) Biological activity (more and larger pores created) Chemistry (calcium > 60% of CEC increases aggregation; magnesium & sodium degrade aggregation & reduce drainage) Soil Peds/Structure Sandy (no Peds) Massive (no Peds)
