4 Weather Factors Affecting Characteristics of Winegrapes Temperature : Minimum temperature. Risk of frosts at the beginning of the season. Maximum temperatures. Photosynthesis declines beyond 23 o C 25 o C (73.4 o F 77 o F). Extreme heat adversely affect grape characteristics. Temperature variability. Narrow night day range is desirable. Sunshine (in some places correlated with temperature). Rainfall and its distribution. Desired in some parts of growing season and less desired in other parts. Humidity: certain level is required for desired characteristics. Excess humidity will lead to fungal diseases. Mild wind moderates temperatures and reduces humidity. Strong and dry wind has negative effects.

5 Weather Factors Affecting Characteristics of Wine Grapes Continued There are different ‘weather’ requirements for each phenological stage (bud break, flowering, ripening, harvest) and for each grape variety. No single environment can provide the ideal climate conditions for grape growing. Two favorable climates: Regions with moderate temperatures, fairly evenly distributed rainfall throughout the year, and with enough sunshine. Continental climate is preferred for even bud break and early growth in spring. Mediterranean type climates, characterized with high and reliable autumn winter spring rainfall and mostly sunny rain free summers. Well drained soil with complementing irrigation is required.

Climate, Wine Grape Characteristics and Prices Climate conditions determine the suitability of particular varieties, grape growing practices and harvest date. Climate represents expectations about weather. Prices may be determined when growing season weather is yet unknown. Climate may affect price through expected weather or long term reputation of a region.
