2 Sequence of Steps – McCabe-Thiele 1. On the equilibrium curve plot (X-Y diagram on a mole basis) locate the abscissae values of xD, xF, xB (and xP if any). 2. Draw the operating line for the concentrating section through the point, y = xD, with a slope of L/V or L/(L + D), this is called the “internal” reflux ratio. 3. Calculate the value of q from enthalpy values for the feed and vapor in contact at the feed plate. 4. Draw the q line through the point, y = xF, with a slope of q/(q-1). If the feed is a saturated liquid, the slope of the q line is infinite (a vertical line) since q = 1.

The point of intersection of the q line with the operating line of the concentrating section is also a point on the operating line for the stripping section, therefore locating the point of intersection of the two operating lines. Draw the operating line for the stripping section from this point to the point y = xB (for indirect or reboiler heating). (If open stem is used the operating line must extend to the value of xB on the x axis.) Alternatively, the stripping operating line can be located by drawing a line upward from the xB point with a slope of L’/V’
