Description and Plan for a Social Science Research Project The Problem How are our children coping with the current economic crisis? What are we as parents and adults doing to help our children cope in today’s stressful economy? The importance of the problem Our children don’t understand the news or read the financial pages in our newspapers but similar to the adults in their lives are dealing with the economic struggles. With some children changing cities, homes and school others are falling into a deep pit of neglect and abuse. Parents are stresses and struggling financially and emotionally. Uncertain and confusing futures create a difficult and unsettling environment with the potential of life long consequences for the children of our future. Prior research Prior research involving children has mainly been focused on abuse and neglect generally due to heredity of familial abuse, drug and alcohol abuse and psychiatric problems. Creating a history of interaction with child protective services. However more recently many news stations and newspapers have reported social workers citing a dramatic increase in child abuse among the unemployed. “In 2009 CBS News reported that child abuse in the United States had increased during the economic recession . It gave the example of a father who had never been the primary care-taker of the children. Now that the father was in that role, the children began to come in with injuries.” Hughes, Sandra (2009).

"Child Abuse Spikes During Recession" , CBS News . BOSTON (Reuters,) wrote an article last year titled “Child abuse spikes as U.S. economy founders’ Osterman, Cynthia (2009) . And the Washington Post ran this article: "Child Neglect Cases Multiply As Economic Woes Spread." St. George, D onna and Dvorak, Petula (2008) These are a sampling of articles available describing what our children are largely undergoing as a group in our society. These articles are incentive for a study to understand the long-term effect on our children
