ABSTRACT Negative environmental consequences are looming regarding our water and soil on this planet. For an individual to be able to help find sustainable solutions, a person must be educated and possess the desire to learn and willingness to change policy. This report reflects a passion toward change and a strategy to implement change through quality higher education. With an understanding of what environmental science entails with a closer look at the specialty of water and soil contaminants. Providing interviews with current scientists and a look toward a position of change within a sea of opportunity. The educational requirements are non-less then a physician looking toward the day of his first patient with the choices available are no less important. Quality higher education, coupled with a firm foundation in understanding a specialty such as water and soil contaminants, provide a future prognosis worthy of changing a life. An estimated 25% increase in professional positions by the year 2016, environmental science will be well poised to change our planet for future generations. iii 2

INTRODUCTION With the countless studies provided on a daily basis of our changing earth, environmental science provides an investigative examination into our planet. With opportunities for creative problem solving paired with activism and responsible citizenship. Environmental science is the study of how the natural world interacts biologically, chemically and physically. The purpose of this report is to provide an understanding as to why an individual may choose environmental science as a career. Along with the importance of the work performed through the study of this type of science.
