Additional subjective I would want to know if he has attempted to seek medical help before today for his complaint, what medications he has taken (OTC and/or prescription), if anything has helped alleviate his symptoms, if he has been around anyone else with similar symptoms recently, where he works, if he smokes, and other symptoms like shortness of breath or sore throat. There is no additional objective information that I feel is needed. I would treat JD’s cold with prescription antibiotics. JD has symptoms that point to bacterial infection causing acute sinusitis, or acute rhinosinusitis, which causing inflammation and swelling to the sinuses (MayoClinic, 2018). Acute sinusitis is typically caused by the common cold, a virus, and usually resolves in 7-10 days (MayoClinic, 2017). Symptoms for acute sinusitis include: thick yellow or green drainage from the nose, nasal congestion, pain with tenderness, swelling, and pressure around the eye, cheeks, nose or forehead which can worsen with bending forward, ear pressure, headache, fever, and cough (MayoClinic, 2018). I would prescribe Augmentin 875mg PO twice daily for 10 days. Augmentin is effective with upper respiratory infections, such as sinusitis, and works by binding to the cell wall of bacteria as well as resists beta-lactamase produced by the bacteria (Vallerand & Sanoski, 2019).
