6 Important observations on electromagnetic waves Unlike the motion of a transverse wave on a string in which there is displacement of sections of the string as the wave passed, here there is NO motion of anything Instead, the arrows in (b) represent the magnitude and direction of the electric and magnetic fields at a particular instant The varying magnetic fields induce the varying electric fields by Faraday’s law of induction The varying electric fields induce the varying magnetic fields by Maxwell's law of induction The electric field is always perpendicular to the magnetic field The cross product gives the direction in which the wave travels
