Within a container molecules cannot occupy the volume taken by other molecules, so the molar volume V was reduced by b Attractive forces do exist between molecules (proportional to the square of the gas density), so P is increased by a/V m 2 This generated the first cubic equation of state: P = RT/(V m –b) – a/V m 2 (is this cubic?)
