The research process is not linear Types of scholarship A fact is a verifiable claim A) Natural Science a. The Nature of science (A quotation by Michael Shermer). He wrote a book called “why people believe weird things.” b. Essential characteristics of Nat Science i. Guided by natural law ii. Has to be explanatory by ref to nat law iii. Testable against that physical or empirical world iv. Conclusions are tentative v. It is falsifiable vi. It is a process of inquiry not a set of beliefs. Science has no absolute answers. c. Nat Sci depends on a “standardization” of method, i.e it aims at being objective- you have to use a certain methodology. d. Replications of studies same results e. Scientific-philosophical position: “The world has form and structure independent of differences between individual observers.” f. You need to look at things subjectively even if they are objective. Overview of 3 Areas: Rhetoric, Performance, and Comm. Studies
