Jean Wood PSY3000 - 2 Effective Parenting There are three major parental styles: Authoritarian, overly permissive and authoritative. The authoritarian parent is dominant over the child’s actions, reactions and controls most of the child’s environment. The overly permissive parent is the one who either ignores a situation without considering future ramifications or gives in to every request immediately which may lead to the child becoming easily frustrated or not being able to wait patiently (a skill needed for successful social interactions). Finally, the authoritative parenting style is a type of balance between the controlling authoritarian style and the overly permissive style. The authoritarian parent is also able to move from guidance to structure without excess pressure and can easily move back to allow the child to explore his new abilities or environment on their own. The authoritative parent has good control over their own emotions and realizes the benefit of the moment to be one of learning for the children. Elements of optimal care giving – are based on three main parental reactions. First, A parent’s responsiveness to the child’s signals (crying, facial expressions,
